To avoid fouling c ' f theshuttle mechanism by the heel of a shoe, which occurs when stitching a half sole at the waist in a machine as described in Specification 7793/92 [Class 112], the loop taker 1 is arranged to oscillate in a plane forming an acute angle with the plane of the curved hooked needle 6. The loop taker is provided with a central flange 9 extending from the beak 3 to the other side of the gap 11 in which the needle loop lies as it is carried round the locking thread supplied by a spool mounted on a stud carried by a plate 7 secured by a bayonet joint in a recess in the looptaker. Cylindrical surfaces on either side of the flange 9 engage a raceway formed in a bracket 13 and a block 15 spaced therefrom and secured thereto. Gear teeth 17 formed on the flange and shielded by side plates are always engaged by one or both of pinions 19, 21 driven through gearing 31, 27, 25 from a gear segment of a cam-operated lever 33. The thread-lifter 5 for spreading the needle-thread loop into the path of the loop-taker moves in a plane parallel to that of the needle and then laterally thereof. One end of the lifter is secured in an eccentric bore 'in a split sleeve 63 adjustably clamped in a lever 35 having a rearwardly extending stem 37 rotatably mounted in a lever 39 actuated by a camoperated lever 41. An arm 43 at one side of the lever is coupled by a spring 51 to a pivoted block 49 and a dumb-bell, in two parts 87, 91, separated by a spring 95, engages recesses in the block and arm. The block 49 has a rear extension provided with a recess 53 engaged by an eccentric portion 55 of a rotatable adjusting stud 57. The position of the threadlifter may be. adjusted by adjustment of the stud 57 and the split sleeve 63; its motion is first forwardly to enter the loop and then upwardly and towards the looptaken in a curved path. The construction allows the spool carrying plate 7 to be removed when the loop-taker is turned so that the plate 7 is clear of the plate 23 and the lever 35 is moved forwardly.
