Abstract

580,400. Variable pitch propellers. MICKELSEN, V., SELLAR, W., and REBBECK, SIR F. E. June 6, 1942, No. 7719. [Class 114] The roots 5b of the blades 2 of a ship's propeller carry pinions 6 engaging rack teeth 25 formed at the sides of slots 23 in the body of an annular piston 14 which is movable to vary or reverse the pitch of the blades in an annular recess 13 in the propeller hub 2 under the influence of oil supplied through passages 17, 18 in the hub communicating with supply means located in an axial bore 19 in the propeller shaft 1. The exhaust oil escapes through a chamber 20 in the hub closed by an end cover 4 and lubricates the pinions 6. The hub 2 is fitted with retaining rings 8 engaging between the pinions 6 and the root flanges 5a of the blades and sealed by rubber rings 9. A casing 21 of stream-line-form is secured to the outer end of the hub.
