Abstract

579,668. Automatic smallarms. WESTERN CARTRIDGE CO. Nov. 4, 1943, No. 18335. Convention date, Feb. 26, 1943. [Class 119] The rear end of the receiver 31 of a fixedbarrel automatic firearm is closed, against ingress of dirt &c., by a rotary hollow plug 88 which also, in one angular position, closes the slot 85, Fig. 23, in the receiver wall in which the operating and locking lug 38 on the breechbolt 36 reciprocates. The plug is settable into three different positions, in one of which, shown in Fig. 1, it permits normal working of the weapon; in the second position it moves the cocked hammer 70 to over-cocked position and holds it there and also, by closing the slot' 85, prevents the breech-bolt being moved rearwards from closed position beyond a limited distance sufficient to show whether there is a cartridge in the breech ; and in the third position detains the breech-bolt in fullyopen position. The plug has semicircular ribs 91 at its rear end for interlocking with complementary ribs 87 in a rear extension 84 of the receiver, and a radial lug 92 on which is hinged a finger-piece 96, an extension 98 of which provides a latch to hold the plug in its several positions. Appropriately-shaped slots 101, 103 in the plug provide, in the normalworking position, for the free movement of the breech-bolt locking lugs and the pivoted hammer 70. When the plug is rotated to the second or " safety position, a cam 102 on one wall of the slot 101 pushes back the hammer to an over-cocked position and then obstructs its return ; and in the third position, a tooth 104 at. the front end of slot 103 engages in front of the breech-bolt lug 38 and locks the bolt in fully-open position. A flexible stud 68, used as described in Specification 573,668 in the securing of the barrel and receiver to the stock, enters a transverse slot 100 in the plug and limits the extent of its rotation, so that the ribs 87, 91 cannot be fully disengaged until the weapon is stripped.
