Abstract

237,984. Dawson, Sir A. T., and Buckham, Sir G. T. May 7, 1924. Ordnance, built-up; converting; breech mechanism.-A breech-ring B is constructed to receive any one of a number of detachable barrels A of different calibre or character in such manner that the breech part of the barrel in use extends into the breech-ring with its rear face in a suitable position relatively to the breech mechanism carried by the ring, the extractor of the breech mechanism being operative whichever barrel is in use. The barrel may be secured to the breechring by a bayonet joint locked by a spring bolt C, Fig. 4, engaging a gap in a flange A<2> on the barrel. This bolt may also be provided, as shown, with a head C<1> which, except when the barrel is locked, lies in the path of the breechblock and prevents the closing of the breech. The head may also engage a recess in the breechblock and prevent the opening of the breech if the barrel is not locked. In a modification, Fig. 8, the head C' of the locking bolt has a lip c<2> which lies in front of the cartridge flange and, if the bolt has not engaged the gap in the barrel flange, prevents the cartridge from being fully inserted.
