[Classes 59 and 72] [Also in Group XXII] A machine for reclaiming used foundry sand comprises the combination of a rotary annulus having a partially perforated outer periphery and a partially open inner periphery, sand elevating blades or buckets within the interior of the annulus, a pair of crushing rollers within the region surrounded by the annulus, an electromagnet for extracting iron pieces from sand supplied to the annulus and means for collecting and discharging the said pieces. The machine comprises a framework a within which an annulus c supported on rollers b is rotated by a motor d and chain drive f. The outer periphery of the annulus is formed of a middle perforated section c<1> and imperforate marginal portions c<2>. The inner periphery has imperforate marginal portions c<3> with a gap c<4> between. Within the spacer surrounded by the annulus two shafts j are carried by bearings k and are geared together so as to be driven by a motor n and belt drive q. Crushing. rollers i are mounted on the shafts and are pressed together by springs l acting on the bearings of one of the shafts. Surrounding an upper quadrant of the annulus is an electromagnet u comprising two arcuate polepieces u<1> bridged by a series of windings u<2> on iron cores. In operation, the foundry sand to be treated is fed by a shoot g to the lower part of the annulus and the finer portions pass through the part c<1> to a collecting hopper t beneath. The remainder is carried upwardly by buckets h within the annulus and falls on to the crushing rollers i. Pieces of iron amongst the sand are retained within the annulus by the magnet u until they are carried to a position out of the field of the magnet and beyond the position at which the sand falls from the buckets. The iron pieces then drop into a shoot v. A dustextracting casing w may surround the machine.
