Abstract

1484985 Stamp mills; roller mills AIDA ENG Ltd 4 Feb 1976 [6 Feb 1975] 04307/76 Heading B2A [Also in Division B3] A process for producing fine particles of a magnetic material comprises locating chips A of the magnetic material in a magnetic field so as to align the chips along the lines of force which extend between opposed crusher members 1, 2, and crushing the chips whilst so aligned members 1, 2 may be permanent magnets, or a permanent magnet and a member of magnetic material, and there may be a member (3) of non-magnetic material Figs. 2, 3, (not shown), between members 1, 2, which forms one of the crushing members. The magnetic material may be iron. In Fig. 4 iron chips are released from hopper 24 onto non- magnetic stainless-steel guide 13 and are carried along guide 13 by magnets 11 on endless chain 21 until they are beneath magnetic striking plate 12 which crushes the iron chips when forced down by impact block 26 acting through springs 29 and raised and dropped by cam 30. In a second embodiment, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown) in place of plate 12 and block 26 are a series of magnetic rollers (42) which partially crush the chips as they move along the guide, the rollers (42) then being raised and lowered by motor (58) acting through linkages (61, 57, 54) to crush the chips. In a third embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown) chips A are placed in a recess (74) in a block of non-magnetic material (75) in which is embedded a permanent magnet (71) below the recess, and a magnetic striking member (72) is raised and dropped on the chips. In a fourth embodiment, Fig. 8, chips A are poured through an opening 91 into the nip between magnetic roller 82 and a roller 83 of non-magnetic material with magnets 81 in its periphery, roller 83 being supported by shaft 87 on movable framework 86 urged to the left by springs 90 acting on rods 89, and roller 83 is repeatedly reciprocated back and forth to crush the chips between itself and roller 82.
