Abstract
579,070. Clockwork bomb fuzes. CLARKSON, G. T., and PURVES, R. Nov. 25, 1937, No. 32433. [Classes 9 (i) and 9 (ii)] To obviate audible ticking, electrically or mechanically-fired clockwork fuzes for bombs and land and sea mines have the time interval controlled by an electro-magnetic brake in which eddy currents are produced in a disc or cylinder rotating in a magnetic field. Fig. 1 shows the invention applied to an electricallyfired time fuze for a bomb to be dropped from aircraft. The last wheel g of the gear train driven by the clock-spring drives a disc i of aluminium, silver or copper in the magnetic field between iron or steel polepieces k, t. A switch m driven by reduction gear n from the clockwork train operates after an adjustable time to close the firing circuit through a safety switch r, dry cell wand an electric detonator x. The gear train is started by removing an obstruction-pin q controlled by a spring-pressed cap p which rises when the usual arming vane withdraws the screw y or when a soluble plug is dissolved in the case. of a marine mine. The cup p carries a C-shaped strip of conducting material s which expands into a recess and joins conducting rings z in the firing circuit. In a mechanically-fired fuze having a spring striker, a clock-spring drives a gear train for rotating a damping disc as before, and also a second gear train for rotating a second disc carrying a cam for operating a slide to release a spring-controlled striker for the detonator. The striker spring is cocked in known manner by a weight which moves forward on impact. The gear train is started by the removal of an obstruction-pin when the usual safety pin is withdrawn at the moment of release of the bomb from the aircraft. The obstruction-pin may be removed to start the gear train by inertia on impact.
