Abstract
578,154. Projectile fuzes. FREEMAN, C. T. Dec. 8, 1941, No. 15798. [Class 9 (i)] A striker 3 carried by a dished metal diaphragm 4 is normally restrained in the position shown by a collar 7 which is urged inwardly by a spring 8 but is restrained by a plunger 9. As the bomb falls, wind-vanes 12 rotate and unscrew a cap 11 which falls away, thus allowing a spring 10 to urge outwardly the plunger 9. The fuze is thereby armed. The diaphragm is held in place and protected by a screwed plug 5 apertured at 6 to admit air to the convex side of the diaphragm. While the projectile is falling unobstructed, the air pressure is insufficient to cause reversal of the diaphragm, but when the projectile is exposed to a sudden rise in air pressure, as by approaching an obstruction or by coming into range of blast created by another exploding projectile, the diaphragm reverses and causes the striker 3 to strike the detonator 16. The cap 11 is prevented from accidentally unscrewing during transport &c. by a pin 15 paseing through a hole in the cap into a radial bore in the fuze body, this pin being attached' to a clip 13 which embraces the cap and whose ends may be wired together. An eye 14 on the clip may be attached to a fuze-setting control link, so that the bomb may be dropped " safe " or " live." When the bomb is dropped " live," the control link retains the clip.
