Abstract

263,574. Vickers, Ltd., and Lucas, O. D. Oct. 22, 1925. Projectile fuzes.-A percussion firing-mechanism, specially intended for bombs to be dropped from aircraft, comprises a spring striker A, which is cocked and released by an outward pull on a sleeve B. The sleeve has spring fingers B<1> with rounded ends b confined beneath a shoulder a on the striker by the surrounding fuze body A<3>. A plug B<2> fits into the sleeve B and is secured thereto by a transverse pin b<2> which lies in notches a<3> at the end of the fuze body A<3>. Normally, the spring A<2> of the striker is unstressed, the striker is locked by a safety pin C, and the sleeve B together with the plug B<2> are held in place in the fuze body A<3> by 2, shear wire b<1>. Before the bomb is dropped, the safety pin C is removed, and when the bomb is dropped a pull is exerted on the plug B<2>. This shears the wire b<1> and cocks the striker until the ends of the spring fingers escape into a recess A<1>, whereupon the striker is released and fires a percussion cap D. The pin b<2> prevents accidental rotation of the plug B<2> and consequent shearing of wire b<1>.
