Abstract
577,784. Aircraft gun mountings and framework. SHORT BROS. (ROCHESTER & BEDFORD), Ltd., and McVIE, R. May 20, 1938, No. 15067. [Classes 92 (i) and 92 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] An aircraft gun mounting is carried by a hinged section a of the aircraft body b which is normally flush with the body but can be lowered to provide an opening through which the gun or guns can be fired downwardly. The turntable g of the mounting is carried by a frame d which can be moved in a fore-and-aft direction along guides on the section by poweroperated screws when the mounting is to be withdrawn and the section closed. The section is provided with plates to close the sides of the aperture and is moved about its hinge a<1> by a power cylinder c. A superstructure p on the section carries the ammunition boxes p<2> and an electric motor p' for driving the hydraulic or like generator that supplies the whole of the power. The gunner who occupies a prone position and rests at the front on supports m, n, operates controls o to admit pressure to a press k<2> for elevating the guns by links k, k<2>, and to a similar press for moving the turntable on lateral guides f<1>, the turntable having an extension g<1> engaging a fore-and-aft guide f<5> to effect training. The gun sight l, mounted on the pivoted arm l<1>, is moved synchronously with the gun by links l<2>, l<4> and the arrangement is such that the focal point x of the sight remains near the gunner's head during gun elevation. The ammunition belts are fed to the gun through guides p4 and the empty cases and links leave the gun through conduits i<2>, i<3>.
