Abstract
948,395. Telescopic jib cranes. P. J. M. T. ALLARD, and H. RICOUARD. Nov. 10, 1961 [Nov. 10, 1960], No. 40340/61. Headings B8B and B8H. The length of the telescopic jib of a crane is adjusted automatically as the jib is luffed so that the outer end of the jib moves along a substantially vertical fixed line. As shown in Fig. 1, the jib is luffed about pivots 4 on the base frame 1 by an hydraulic ram 8 and comprises an inner arm 6 provided with a hook 22 and slidably mounted within an outer arm 5. Mounted within the arm 6 there is a ram comprising a cylinder 11 having a partition 14 to provide two chambers in which pistons 15, 16 are movable. Piston rods 17, 18 are secured at 19, 20 to the arms 5, 6 respectively. Flexible pipes a, b connect opposite sides of the piston 16 to opposite sides of the piston 28 of a ram 24 pivoted at 29, 26 to the jib and brackets la on the base 1. The effective piston areas of the pistons 15, 28 are equal and it is stated that by suitable positioning of the pivot points 26, 29, the displacement of the piston 28 as the jib is luffed produces a corresponding displacement of the cylinder 11 so as to maintain the centre C of a hook 22, which is secured to the cylinder 11 approximately on the vertical line V. The ram constituted by the left-hand end of cylinder 11 is supplied through flexible pipes c, d and controlled individually by the driver to vary the length of the jib independently of the automatic adjustment movement. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the cylinder of ram 24 is rigidly secured to the jib adjacent the pivot point 4 and the piston-rod carries a roller which engages in a fixed rigid vertical guide.
