Abstract

1455145 Spreaders CLARK EQUIPMENT CO 20 Nov 1973 [20 Nov 1972] 53848/73 Heading B8H [Also in Division F2] A straddle carrier 10 is provided with an extendable and retractable spreader frame for handling freight containers of different lengths. The spreader frame comprises an outer hollow beam 74 with an intermediate beam 72 telescopically received in one end thereof and an inner beam 70 telescopically received in the other end thereof and also telescopic within the intermediate beam. An aligning sleeve 80 is mounted by brackets 82 and pin and slot connections 84, 86 on the inner end of the intermediate beam for axial movement relative thereto and engages the inner end of the inner beam to guide same in the fully extended condition of the spreader frame wherein the inner beam is out of engagement with the intermediate beam. Wear pads 96, 97, 98 provide sliding surfaces for the inner and intermediate beams and for the sleeve. Cross beams 64, 64<SP>1</SP> are mounted on the outer ends of the inner and intermediate beams and oppositely directed piston and cylinder units 88, 90 are connected between the outer beam and the cross beam to effect the extension and retraction of the spreader. A frame actuated latch (104) Fig. 6 (not shown) engages in a selected aperture of a series of apertures in the inner and intermediate beams to lock the spreader at a desired extension. Further cross beams 66, 68 have a hook 194 pivotally mounted at each end thereof and movable by a piston and cylinder unit 204 for engagement with the corner castings on a freight container. The pivot point 200 of each hook is vertically displaceable to accommodate different positions of the holes in the corner castings. The spreader is suspended by cables 57, 59 from cross beams 54, 56 carried by hydraulic rams 50, 52 mounted on the limbs 12, 14 of a U-shaped chassis of the carrier and is guided during its vertical displacement under the action of the rams 50, 52 by guide beams 60, 60<SP>1</SP> extending transversely thereof and carrying sliders (78) Fig. 3 (not shown) which engage in guides (76) secured to the limbs 12, 14. Hydraulic rams 156 act between its outer beam 74 and each of the guide beams to effect slewing or side sifting of the spreader relative to the chassis.
