Abstract
1,009,121. Jib cranes; load handling. SIMON ENGINEERING DUDLEY Ltd. Feb. 10, 1964 [Feb. 15, 1963], No. 6190/63. Headings B8B and B8H. A lifting vehicle 11 comprises a telescopic boom assembly 12 with a carrier 27 at its outer end and pivoted about a horizontal axis at its inner end. The boom assembly 12 is mounted on a support 10 for rotation about a vertical axis and comprises a boom 13 with an extension piece 14. The extension piece 14 is extended and retracted by a double acting hydraulic piston and cylinder unit with a piston-rod 18 carrying a sheave 19, 20 at each end. A chain 23 is attached to the boom 13 at a position 24, passes round sheave 19, then round a sheave 21 attached to the boom 13 and is attached to the extension piece 14 by a projection 26. A continuation of the chain 23 is also attached to the projection 26 and passes round a sheave 22 fixed to the boom 13, round sheave 20 and is attached to the boom 13 at a position 25. The arrangement is such that any longitudinal force exerted by or on the extension piece 14 is transmitted to or from the piston and cylinder unit by the chain 23 so that the piston rod 18 is subjected to tensile load. The carrier 27 is kept horizontal by a ram 28 and may have levers (not shown) to control the movements of the machine. Alternatively the carrier 27 may be kept horizontal by one or two chains or cables (not shown). A hose (not shown) may be provided for carrying water to the carrier 27 when it is required to use the vehicle 11 for firefighting purposes. The telesopic boom assembly 12 may be used in a telescopic jib crane (not shown).
