577,389. Valves. BIRMINGHAM ALUMINIUM CASTING (1903) CO., Ltd., PRITCHARD, B. F., and SHERLOCK, W. N. (Representatives of PRITCHARD, P.), and TINSLEY, L. April 15, 1944, No. 7009. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXII] In casting ingots or other articles by forcing metal 11 into a mould 14 from a pot 10 by admitting compressed air or gas thereto from a pipe 17, one or more finely variable leak valves 18, 19 are arranged on the pipe 17 between the pot and the shut-off valve. The shut-off valve 20 may be similar to the valves 18, 19, but arranged to connect the pipe 17 to the supply pipe 30 and thus give a fine control to the amount of gas supplied. These leak valves may be constructed as shown in Fig. 2, with a plug a having a bore e always open to the entrance c, a lateral bore f which may be brought to align with the exhaust opening d, and a circumferential groove g connected to the bore f and having a progressively diminishing crosssection. The plug is held in its seat by a spring and is adjusted by a handle h, the cover j bearing a scale to show the position of the handle. When a leak valve is used at 20, the openings c, d are connected to the pipes 17, 30 respectively. Specification 516,231, [Group XXII], is referred to.
