Abstract

577,341. Sacks. THOMAS, D. Aug. 11, 1944, No. 15331. [Class 94 (ii)] [Also in Group XI] Apparatus for use in sweeping domestic chimneys comprises an open-topped sacklike receptacle 10 adapted to stand on the hearth and provided around the open top with an inflatable pneumatic rim 11 which; when inflated, bears against the walls of the flue opening, the receptacle having at the front a baffled aperture 17 for the passage of the rods 18 of the sweeping brush. The rim is provided with inflation and deflation valves 12, 13 and is fitted, at the rear, with a bracket 14 on which the cleaning rods 18 bear. A drawcord 16 is provided for closing the mouth of the receptacle. As shown in Fig. 2, the aperture 17 is fitted with a flanged bush 20 the inwardly projecting part 19 of which is screwed to receive a rod-cleaning brush 25 having radially extending bristles 24. The front of the bush 20 is formed with a threaded recess 26 which houses an apertured rubber sealing pad 30 and into which is screwed a ferrule 27 carried on the end of a tubular handle 29. The chimney throat immediately above the fireplace may be formed with a recess 49, Fig. 5, in which the rim 11 is retained when inflated. In a modification, the receptacle is of circular section and the rim 11 is provided with a combined inflation and deflation device.
