Abstract
575,387. Metal vapour apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and GALLIZIA, E. Feb. 13, 1942, No. 1950. [Class 39 (i)] A single' anode vapour electric arc converter has the anode 4 in the form of a ring placed concentrically with the cathode pool 2, so that the stream of vapour from the cathode has an unobstructed passage to the condensing chamber 6. The anode may be continuous or in sections and is disposed in an annular chamber 5 extending outwardly from the main envelope and deionizing members' 11 are positioned between it and a conical baffle 12 over the cathode pool. Cooling is by external water jackets 3 and 7 and an internal cooling coil 8. Condensed mercury is collected in a trough 13 and led back to the cathode pool by a pipe. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), air cooling is employed comprising external jackets and ducts passing through the anode chamber, condensing chamber and whole length of the envelope. In a further arrangement, Fig. 5 (not shown), the anode chamber is omitted and a conical baffle overlies the anode to lead the condensed vapour back to the pool.
