Abstract

828,619. Cooling discharge tubes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. June 19, 1956 [June 22, 1955], No. 18964/56. Class 39(1). An electron discharge device, particularly of the velocity-modulation or travelling-wave type, has an electrode assembly comprising a hollow copper conical electrode 10 for the collection of electrons, a conical jacket 13 of slightly different taper surrounding the electrode and spaced therefrom to provide an -annular passage of substantially constant cross-sectional area, the jacket containing, in a cylindrical portion 15, a plurality of circumferentially spaced openings 16 directed substantially circumferentially with respect to the annular passage and means for supplying cooling fluid, preferably water, under pressure to the openings 16 to cause the fluid to pass along the passage in a spiral path of progressively decreasing radius. The fluid is supplied through a pipe 20 in an outer casing 17 and leaves through a pipe 19 connecting to a cylindrical portion 14 of the jacket 13. The cylindrical portion 15 of the jacket is bonded to a flange 11 on the electrode 10. The casing 17 is bonded to a flange 12 on the electrode 10 but may be removably mounted by providing cooperating flanges on the casing 17 and flange 12. It is stated that to provide an annular passage of constant cross-sectional area would require a jacket 13 having a surface which is a hyperboloid of revolution.
