Abstract

574,897. Spray carburetters. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. April 24, 1941, No. 5323. Convention date, May 10, 1940. [Class 7 (iii)] [Also in Group XIX] The density of the air or mixture in the induction pipe 10 of an engine or other gaspumping device is ascertained by causing a pump 36 to draw air &c. from the .pipe at 20 and return it at 24 through a restricted orifice 28, the pressure difference between the two sides of which gives an indication of the density. The pump is driven by the engine and comprises vanes 46 rotated in an annular cage 48, which is adjusted vertically to vary the displacement at the two sides of the pump, by a speed governor 62, so that the quantity of air &c. passed through the pump remains constant. The different pressures at the two sides of the orifice 28 are used to act on opposite sides of a diaphragm which adjusts the annular cage of a fuel pump similar in construction to the pump 36. The pump may supply a fuel nozzle arranged in the inlet of the supercharger. A pressure gauge may also be used to measure the pressure difference at the orifice and consequently the density. The governor load may be adjusted at 74, and the pump displacement .by a screw 76.
