Abstract
1,217,801. Spray carburetters. HONEYWELL Inc. April 17, 1969 [April 17, 1968], No. 19721/69. Heading F1B. [Also in Division G3] A fuel metering means 25 supplying fuel to an air intake 14, which may be part of an I. C. engine, is operated by a fluid signal in response to the mass rate of air flow through the intake. The fluid signal is obtained from a cascade of four proportional fluid amplifiers 61, 66, 71 and 76 supplied from a source 130, such as an electrically or enginedriven compressor or a storage tank and controlled by a velocity signal from parts 81, 82, a temperature signal from a capillary tube connected to the source through a restrictor 94, and a pressure signal from the port 81 through a static pressure chamber 101 and restrictors 103, 106 and 107. A signal corresponding to mass air flow appears at the outlet ports f and g of amplifer 66 and is modified by a fuel temperature signal applied to the final amplifier 76 from a capillary tube 121 and a signal corresponding to engine demand. The latter is obtained from a pressure port 111 in the inlet manifold 12 and is passed through a restrictor 114 and a pressure tank 115 forming a high-pass filter so that an increased fuel air ratio is provided in response to deceleration on increased engine load. A diaphragm 43 connected to a fuel valve 42 is actuated by the output signal from the final amplifier 76 while a second diaphragm actuates the fuel valve in accordance with the pressure difference between fuel inlet and outlet ports 30, 32. Fuel is supplied through the valve to a nozzle 18 from a pump 27 which may be driven electrically or by the engine and is mixed with the air flow in a chamber 15 containing fixed or movable vanes 19 and a throttle valve 20. The air flow may, alternatively, be sensed by a dynamic pressure tap facing the air flow and the temperature by a bulb containing expansible fluid. The invention is shown applied to a V-engine.
