Abstract
549,957. Specific-gravity estimating apparatus. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. Dec. 17, 1940, No. 17779. Convention date, Dec. 27, 1939. [Class 97 (iii)] For estimating continuously the density of a fluid such as a gas or air a casing 10 is divided into three intercommunicating chambers 12, 14, 16 together with a flow channel 18. The chamber 12 is provided with a pump 66 which passes into chamber 14 a definite volume of gas for a particular constant speed of the pump. A valved orifice 34 provides communication between the chambers 14, 16 and the chamber 16 communicates with the flow channel 18 by duct 22 adjacent a constriction 70 in the flow channel 18. The valve 36 is provided with a stem 38 under the control of a spring 56. The pressure difference at opposite sides of the orifice 34 is a function of the density of the gas and is measured by means of a manometer 65 or operates a servomotor connected to the chambers at 62, 64. The orifice 34 is conditioned to the volume of gas passing and therefore to the particular constant speed of the pump by means of a speedresponsive device or governor 40 driven from the pump 66 by gears 72, 74, 76 and acting on the stem 38 of the valve 36. The pump 66 may be driven by a flexible shaft or by means of the gas flow.
