Abstract
573,783. Gas turbines. SOC. RATEAU. March 9, 1942, No. 3098. Convention date, March 10, 1941. [Class 110 (iii)] A useful output turbine Tm and an auxiliary turbine Ta driving a compressor C are supplied with gases from a combustion chamber Ch, and the temperature of the gases after leaving the first stage moving blades is maintained constant, or within a pre-determined temperature range. One or more compressors, with or. without intercooling ; and one or more auxiliary turbines with or without inter-heating may be used, and the plant includes two or more shafts. To lower the temperature of the gases after the first stage of Tm a valve O<1> is closed and a valve O<2> opened to speed up the turbine Ta and supply more air from C. A speed governor R<1>, or other regulator, controls the supply of fuel to a burner b, and a thermostat t<1> regulates the temperature at the required point by opening valve O<1> and closing valve O<2> (or vice versa) simultaneously. The turbines Tm and Ta may be in series. The thermostat t<1> may act on a single valve in a passage bypassing Tm. Either turbine may be the highpressure turbine. In Fig. 5 control is obtained by using an electric, hydraulic or pneumatic generator G which supplies a motor M on the shaft of Ta through a regulator controlled by t<1>. On a temperature rise at the first stage in Tm, the generator G speeds up the motor M and more air is supplied by C. In Fig. 6 a governor R<1> acts on a burner b, and a governor R<2> on one end of a balance-lever p, the other end of which is controlled by t<1>. In a further arrangement, Fig. 7, the compressor C supplies two combustion chambers, one for each turbine. A burner b<2> is controlled by a balance lever p<2> coupled to R<2> through a further lever p<1>2, and R<1> acts on b<1> and the other end of p2. In a modified arrangement one combustion chamber supplies branches leading to the two turbines, a thermostat t<1>, controls O<1> and O<2> and a valve in a passage leading compressed air to the turbine Ta is controlled by a balance lever p<1>2 functioning as in Fig. 7.
