Abstract

573,137. Piston valves. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., and SAINT, I. H. G. Jan. 3, 1944, No. 90. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXVI] A cylindrical slide valve is packed by a rubber or other elastic ring 38 of such size as to be normally contained wholly within a groove 36 in the valve or its housing and pressed into contact with the other member by pressure fluid, which has access to the base of the groove, e.g. through passages 43, 42 and 40 in the valve. When the packing overruns the edge of a port in the valve or housing, the pressure within the packing groove is balanced by the pressure on the sealing surface of the packing ring, which then contracts within its groove, whereby undue wear of the packing ring is prevented. The stroke of the valve is limited by a washer 30 secured to the end of the valve working in a recess 22 on the valve housing.
