Abstract

570,015. Cable tensioning. GENERAL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and LEATHER, G. B. Sept. 22, 1943, No. 15569. [Class 108 (iii)] A link interposed in a cable for compensating changes of tension comprises a cylinder 4 attached by a fork 8 to one length of cable and a piston 10 and rod 12 attached by a fork 16 to the other length of cable. A spring 18 interposed between the piston 10 and the cylinder head 14 imparts the requisite tension to the cable and the adjustment of the cable to the desired initial tension is facilitated by inserting a selected semicircular spacer 42 between the head 14 and a shoulder 44 on the fork 16. The spacers are of different lengths, and the cable tension is increased till the spacer drops off. To prevent too ready compression of the spring 18 when an operating load is applied to the cable, a liquid contained in the cylinder 4 is made to pass through a bleed valve orifice 22 when extension takes place, the valve 20 readily opening against a spring 24 when the load is lessened and compression of the link takes place. A spring-pressed piston 32 moving in the hollow piston-rod 12, or otherwise located, is open at one side to the atmosphere and on the other has liquid communicating through a passage 38 with the further end of cylinder 4. This compensates for the inequality effect produced by the effective area of the piston 10 being not the same on each side.
