Abstract

615,549. Shock-absorbers; liquid springs. ELECTRO-HYDRAULICS (MESSIER), Ltd., (formerly MESSIER AIRCRAFT EQUIPMENT, Ltd.), and ORLOFF, G. Feb. 15, 1946, No. 4879. [Class 108 (iii)] Shock absorption means comprise a liquid pressure cylinder hydraulically full with a compressible liquid, a piston assembly displaceable in the cylinder, including either a piston rod terminating in a piston or a piston head separating two piston rods of different diameter and means for allowing restricted flow around or outside the piston head. In the construction shown a piston rod 5 terminates in a head 4 slidable in a cylinder 1. The restricted flow means comprise an external pipe 8 connecting each end of the cylinder via a plurality of ports such as 10, 11, one or all of which may be valve-controlled such as by a spring-biassed valve 12 and may be controlled by regulator means such as a manually controlled valve 13. Auxiliary damping over a part of the stroke may be provided by a grooved passage 15 or by an auxiliary byepass duct 16 which may have additional branches 16a. The shock absorber may be applied to buffers for railway stock and to the suspension of vehicles and aircraft.
