[Also in Division G3] A pneumatic jack having maximum power and speed at the start of both the forward and return strokes has the side 5 of the piston 3, Fig. 1, connected to a distributer 6 which is adapted to communicate with either a pressure source 7 or atmosphere 8 and the other side 10 connected to a reservoir 11, an escape path 13 being provided between the side 5 and the composite volume formed by the side 10 and reservoir. As shown in Fig. 2, the reservoir 11 is incorporated in the piston rod 4 and is in communication with the side 10 through an orifice 20. The rate of flow along the escape path is controlled by means of a throttle formed by a helical groove on a plunger 29, the plunger being adjustable by screw means along a stepped axial bore in the piston so as to vary the effective length of groove. Damping at the end of each stroke is effected by means of ducts 22, 23 and 25, 26 provided with throttling adjustments. To operate the jack, the side 5 is connected with the air supply 7 and as the piston moves along its stroke, the power of the jack decreases owing to compression of the volume of air at the side 10 and in the reservoir, the throttling device in the escape path 13 operating so that the pressures on each side of the piston become balanced on completion of the stroke. The return stroke is effected by connecting the side 5 with atmosphere and as the piston moves along its stroke, the power of the jack decreases at a rate depending on the rate of escape through the path 13 and the rate of exhaust through adjustable reducing means 9; at the end of the return stroke the pressures on each side of the piston are balanced. A duct 35 is provided to expand piston packings 33, 33a. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, the reservoir is disposed externally and adapted to receive the escape path 44, 46 controlled by reducing means 45; instead of single reducing means 45 to serve both forward and return strokes, additional reducing means 45a together with non-return valves 47, 47a may be employed.
