Abstract
569,419. Tanning agents. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. June 15, 1943, No. 9546. Convention date, July 25, 1942. [Class 76] A tanning liquor comprising a methylol melamine is obtained by dissolving in hot water at 60-100‹ C. a dry water-soluble mixture of 126 parts of melamnine and 65-180 parts of para-formaldehyde. To prevent formation of a salt-sensitive resin, the solution may be cooled or diluted, or both. The dry mixture may include a small amount of an alkaline buffering agent such as borax, sodium carbonate or bicarbonate, or trisodium phosphate to prevent premature reaction during storage or transit. An example illustrates formation of the liquor and its uses for tanning pickled calfskin.
