Abstract

569,351. Brush-gear for electric motors. JACK & HEINTZ, Inc. March 1, 1943, No. 3355. Convention date, July 11, 1941. [Class 35] A removable brush-carrying and -lifting unit for a motor, more particularly a motor for impulse starters of aircraft engines, comprises a plate 16 bolted to the commutator casing 8 of the machine and carrying insulated arms 17 terminating in contacts 18 which are clamped to binding posts 49 in a terminal box to which current for the brushes 28 is supplied. The brushes are mounted in holders 25, arranged in pairs and pivoted to the arms 17 at 26, springs 35 urging the brushes towards the commutator 4. Insulated rollers 30, engaging lugs 29 on the brush holders, are carried by toggle levers 48 which normally hold the brushes off the commutator under the action of a compression spring 41 arranged between the fixed core 39a and movable core 38a of a solenoid 38, the levers being pivoted to the movable core. Energisation of the solenoid winding removes the spring pressure on the toggle joint and allows the brush springs 35 to move the brushes into contact with the commutator.
