[Class 35.] Rotary machines; brush-holders ; terminals and accessories, arrangement on machines.-An engine starter of the inertia type comprises a flywheel which constitutes the armature of an electric motor and may be set in rotation by hand or by electrical means disposed within the flywheel. As shown, the flywheel comprises a disc 14 to which are secured laminations 15 provided with internal slots for carrying conductors 18 leading to the commutator 19. Field poles 22 within the flywheel are secured to the end wall 21 of the casing 20. The shaft 13 of the flywheel is provided with a pinion 9 connected by gears 8, 7 to a gear wheel 5 in which slides a jaw clutch 4 movable into engagement with the clutch member 6 on the engine shaft by means not shown. When the flywheel is to be driven electrically, a hand switch 39 closes the circuit of a solenoid 36, the plunger of which switches on the motor by means of a contact member 41 bridging contacts 34, 35. The plunger of the solenoid also causes the brushes 28, which are pivoted at 24 and are normally held out of engagement with the armature by a spring 31, to come into engagement with the commutator; this is effected through a lever 43 engaging the rod 29 on which the brush springs 31 and brush-holders are mounted. The brush gear and solenoid are protected by a detachable cover 45.
