Abstract
569,290. Controlling aircraft. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., ORDIDGE, F. H., CHAPLIN, H. and COSTIGAN, F. J. Nov. 19, 1943, No. 19362. [Class 4] To enable an aircraft pilot to feel the resistance of a power-operated aileron or other aerofoil, the control column torque rod or other oscillatory member is fitted with a double-armed lever having its ends connected by springs or spring-loaded struts to a piston in a cylinder connected to a forwardly-opening Pitot tube so that variations in airspeed cause a variation in the spring loading of the torque rod. As shown, a torque rod b has a doublearmed lever m connected by telescopic struts g, h, enclosing springs j, to symmetrically disposed points f on a piston d working in a cylinder a. The space beneath the piston is connected by a tube c to the Pitot tube. The struts converge towards the centre of the piston space, and where an inverted piston is used may converge to a common atttachment point within the piston. The double-armed lever may be in the form of a cam to co-operate directly, or through a spring, with the piston.
