Abstract

568,551. Pipe joints. MALE, S. M. Oct. 1. 1943, No. 16157. [Class 99 (i)] [Also in Group XXXIII] In a variable-pitch propeller in which liquid under pressure is transferred between a stationary muff 23 and a rotary shaft 10 which it .surrounds, the muff and shaft have complementary tapered surfaces 15, means for biasing the muff axially into engagement with the shaft, and disengaging means for automatically moving the muff in the opposite direction when it tends to be rotated by the shaft. In the form shown, oil supplied by passages 20, 21, 22 in a stationary casing 12 passes through openings 27, 28, 29 and recesses 24, 25, 26 in the muff passages 16, 17, 18 in the shaft 10, passages 16A, 17A, 18A in a header 19 within the shaft, and tubes 16B, 17B, 18B, respectively. The tube 16B supplies oil to lubricate the engine bearings, whilst the tubes 17B, 18B convey oil to the two ends of a cylinder containing a pitch-changing piston. Additional lubricating passages 41, 42 may be provided in the muff and/or, shaft. The muff 23 and a ring 35 secured to the casing 12 are formed with radial flanges 31, 32 and 36, 37 respectively, to form spaces in the muff, each of which contains U-section rubber or other resilient packing rings 33 held apart by apertured spacing rings 34. The two packing rings 33 and the pressure )il between the flanges 32, 36 bias the muff 23 axially into engagement with the shaft 10. Alternatively, this bias may be obtained by means of a spring. When the, muff tends to be rotated by the shaft, it is automatically moved in the opposite direction by means of one or more triangular cams 38 on the muff engaging corresponding recesses 39 in a ring 40 secured to the casing 12. The cams 38 may be mounted on a frame connected to the muff.
