Abstract

736,477. Rotary joints. JOHNSON CORPORATION. Oct. 13, 1953 [Jan. 19, 1953], No. 28218/53. Class 99 (1). A rotary nipple tube 14 formed for connection with a rotary structure carries axially spaced collars 56, 56<SP>1</SP> and a bearing sleeve 18, e.g. of carbon graphite, by which a hollow casing 10 is supported on the tube, the tube passing with an all-round clearance through an opening 12 in the casing and extending axially within the latter. The collar 561 is fixed to the tube 14 and the collar 56 is slidable on the tube and axially spaced from the adjacent end of the sleeve 18, each collar having a part-spherical surface 54, 54<SP>1</SP> co-operating with similar surfaces 52, 52<SP>1</SP> on sealing rings 46, 48, e.g. of carbon graphite, located between each collar and end wall surfaces 40, 42 of the casing 10. A spring 66 operates between one end of the sleeve 18 and the collar 56 to maintain the spherical surfaces of the collars and sealing rings in engagement, and the sealing rings in engagement with the end walls of the casing. As shown, steam passing through an opening 22 in the casing and radial openings 20 in the tube 14 flows along an annular chamber 24 formed between the tube and a pipe 26 concentric with the tube, the pipe carrying condensate from the rotary structure to an opening 70 in the casing end cap 30. An adjustable sleeve 28 entered into a counterbore 60 in the collar 56 clamps packing rings 62 around the pipe 26. The end surfaces 40, 42 of the casing 10 are respectively formed by a ring 34 secured between the cap 30 and the casing, and an inturned flange 44. Adjacent pairs of joints are connected together by a stay rod passing through apertured lugs 72 on the casings of those joints, the rod preventing turning of the casings and relieving flexible hoses connected to the openings 70 of strain.
