Abstract

1,008,881. Expansion &c. joints. YARROW & CO. Ltd. May 4, 1964 [May 3, 1963], No. 17672/63. Heading F2G. An assembly which permits limited relative movement between conduits 1, 2 due to thermal expansion or varying internal pressure conditions, includes a sleeve 3 the ends of which are disposed in overlapping relation to the ends of the conduits to define annular gaps between the sleeve and conduits, supporting means permitting relative movement between the sleeve and conduits while maintaining the annular gaps substantially constant, each gap being bridged by an annular seal 9 formed of flexible material and having oppositely disposed peripheral edges thereof secured in a fluid-tight manner to the sleeve and end of an adjacent conduit; circumferentially extending portions of the seals are disposed in overlapping relation within the gaps such that movement of either or both conduits relative to the sleeve is accommodated by relative movement of the overlapping portions of the seals. As shown, the sleeve 3 incorporates pads 4 having substantially spherical surfaces 4a in contact with supporting members 7. In modifications : (a) the sleeve comprises tubular parts arranged to permit axial movement therebetween and at the inner ends thereof is connected by gimbal rings to the conduits, the latter having convexly curved outer surfaces complementary to and in spaced relation with concavely curved surfaces on the outer ends of the sleeve; and (b) the spherical bearing pads formed on the conduits are in contact with the sleeve, the seals 9 being disposed within the ends of the conduits.
