Abstract

568,314. Alloys. ADELINE, P. April 1, 1941, No. 4391. [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Group III] An alumino-thermic process for making ferromanganese comprises roasting manganese dioxide, for example, until 75-85 per cent of the ore is Mn3O4, mixing the roasted ore with aluminium in the form of turnings, borings, or the like, and with slag-forming material which may be slaked lime, calcium sulphate, barium oxide, or barium sulphate, and igniting the mixture, the proportions and rate of feed being such that the reaction temperature is not over 1900‹ C., preferably 1700-1800‹ C. An alkalimetal nitrate or chlorate and a flux such as fluorspar may also be added. The resulting slag may be run into water and treated for the recovery of alumina. The roasting of the manganese dioxide may be effected at 900‹ C. for 30-40 minutes. Specification 20004/05, [Class 82], is referred to.
