Abstract

566,798. Plug-cocks. GUTHRIE, C. G. April 24, 1943, Nos. 6602 and 16172. [Class 135] A plug-cock provided with an easing device has the plug inserted wide end foremost into the cock casing which has a ported liner tapered to receive the plug and is a substantially fluid-tight fit in a cavity in the casing. As shown in the Figures, the cock has a single inlet 11 and two outlets 12 leading from ports 18 in the liner 13 which are controlled by ports 19a in the plug 19. The end 16 of the liner and the underface of a flange 15 are ground into corresponding seats in the casing and held in contact by a detachable cover 31 and screws 32. Dowel pins 17 engage recesses in the cover and liner to hold the latter in its correct position. A tubular actuating spindle 21 is rotatably mounted in the cover surrounding a spindle 20 extending from the small end of the plug. A spring washer 30 is arranged between the end of the spindle 21 and a nut 29 on the end of the spindle 20 and a thrust bearing is interposed between a flange on the spindle 21 and the cover. Tapered rollers or balls 26 are interposed between cam recesses 24, 25 formed respectively in a plate secured to the bottom of a deep recess in the smaller end of the plug and in the lower end of the spindle 21 which enters the recess in the plug. To prevent leakage; the plug above and below the ports may have a series of circumferential grooves or single helical grooves. The plug may have an inclined slot or a series of ports of graduated sizes arranged along a diagonal line or the ports may be trapezoidal, the ports in the plug and liner being of opposite hand. The plug may be in the form of a skirt, the ports being formed by cutting apertures in the walls of the plug from the base upwards so -providing a certain amount of resiliency in the plug. A locking device is provided comprising a spring- pressed sliding pawl 44 housed in a boss on the cover and co-operating with serrations on the hub 39 of a detachable handle 28. According to the first Provisional Specification, the locking device comprises a spring plate welded to the nut 29 and having downwardly-directed pointed ends co-operating with bosses and recesses formed in a plate secured to the casing. The pointed ends engage alternately with the recesses in the plate. The plug and liner may be made from thermoplastic or one of the heatresisting glasses such as that sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Pyrex."
