Abstract
566,578. Prepayment mechanism for meters. BRITISH ELECTRIC METERS, Ltd., COOP, N. B., and WHITE, E. S. April 9, 1943, No. 5735. [Class 27] In prepayment mechanism for electricity &c. meters in which a price-change plate or disc n is employed, the coin pocket or holder a drives the index and prepayment spindle m through a friction ratchet clutch g, k which takes up the drive immediately without any play, a similar clutch being provided at k<1> between the spindle and a fixed part to prevent reverse movement of the spindle. Thus, the change-plate n can be adjusted to permit price changes in small equal amounts, such as by farthings per unit, without the use of change wheels or changespeed gearing. In the construction shown, the change-plate n has a stop o, the position of which determines the amount of rotation permitted the coin holder before the coin is discharged in the usual manner into the coin box. When a coin is inserted through a slot in the change-plate, it enters the coin holder a and rocks a lever b about its fulcrum c so that a tooth d on the lever engages in a slot e in a member f fixed to the wedge part g of the ratchet clutch. When the coin holder is rotated, the spring-loaded balls h couple the part g to an annulus k fixed to the spindle m and drive the latter.
