Abstract

Ropes and like textile materials, such as twines and cords, having a basis of filaments or fibres of regenerated cellulose are impregnated with a water-resistant ester or ether of cellulose. The impregnating composition may comprise solvents and softeners or plasticizers. The treatment improves the wet tenacity, handle and compactness of the ropes or the like and renders them substantially waterproof. The cellulose derivative is preferably applied in non-aqueous solution at an elevated temperature. In an example, a rope of regenerated cellulose yarns of tenacity 3-6 grams per denier made by stretching cellulose acetate yarns in steam and completely saponifying the stretched yarns, is impregnated with a solution comprising ethyl cellulose, castor oil, xylene and butanol. Instead of treating the rope itself, the treatment may be applied to yarns, strands, or cords of high tenacity regenerated cellulose before these are laid up to form a rope. The treatment may be applied to staple fibre yarns in the course of their conversion into rope. The regenerated cellulose filaments or fibres may be associated with cotton, linen, jute, ramie, hemp, silk, wool, cellulose ester or ether, polyvinyl ester or ether, or polyamide fibres. The water-resistant cellulose derivative with which the ropes are treated may be ethyl, propyl, benzyl, hexyl, or other cellulose ether, or cellulose propionate, butyrate, palmitate, stearate, laurate, or other cellulose ester. As softener or plasticizer there may be used castor, olive, palm, or other vegetable oil, or a mineral oil, or tri-(monochlor butyl) phosphate, or dimethyl phthalate.
