565,117. Fuel supply to carburetters. THOMPSON PRODUCTS, Inc. July 23, 1942, No. 10323. Convention date, Sept. 5, 1941. [Class 7 (iii)] The supply of liquid fuel to the inlet of a fuel pump 22 feeding a carburetter 16 is ensured at all altitudes by the use of an auxiliary pump 13 connected to two outlets from the fuel tank 14, Fig. 1, or to a single outlet as in Fig. 4. Pipes 36, 37 leading from these outlets are connected together before they reach the pump 13 so as to provide a sump 37a leading to the pump impeller 32, driven, for example, by an electric motor 33. The vapour bubbles forming in the fuel at higher altitudes are separated by the impeller and rise to the surface of the fuel through the pipe 36 or 37 which offers the least resistance, the liquid fuel being supplied to the pump 13 through the other pipe. The vapour escapes by a vent 14a. A hand pump 12 is also fitted in the delivery pipe 21. The pipes 36, 37 may be connected to separate fuel tanks. In another form, Fig. 4, a single pipe 61 leads from the tank to the pump 13c, a tapered throat 49b being provided leading to the impeller, so that the vapour bubbles ascend at the sides of the pipe 61. as shown, leaving a central path for the liquid fuel to flow to the pump.
