Abstract
565,084. Launching and landing aircraft. PAUS, C. C. Nov. 25, 1942, No. 16697. [Class 4] An aeroplane is provided with one or a pair of arms 1, 2 hinged at one end at or near the centre of gravity of the aircraft and having hooked ends 5 by which it can be suspended from a carriage running on a rail mounted on brackets from a ship's side, or engaged with a shock-absorbing trapeze when coming in to land. The members 1, 2 normally lie along the fuselage where they are secured by a catch 10, but when alighting they are raised to a vertical position by jacks 9. Shock-absorbers 7 are provided in the members 1, 2. The hooks 5 have spring-hinged parts to snap over the trapeze. For launching the aircraft it is detachably suspended from a block 12, Fig. 7, on a counterbalanced frame 13 having rollers 14 running on a cylindrical rail 15 mounted on brackets 18 on a ship's side, the brackets being fixed or foldable. For receiving an aircraft, a bar 23 or a cranked bar 24, Fig. 8, is suspended from shock-absorbing pistons 25, 27 in cylinders 26, the piston-rods of the pistons 27 being pivoted upon a horizontal bar 28 supported by a stanchion 29 about which the bar 28 can be swung inboard or outboard. Additional shockabsorbers may be provided as shown in dotted lines. The hooks 5 on the aeroplane engage the bar 23 or 24 and the aircraft is brought to rest.
