Abstract
564,268. Milling-machines and cutters. LIMB, F. V. March 6, 1943, No. 3667. [Class 83 (iii)] In a machine for trimming sheet metal the work is laid on a die A and fed towards a rotating cutter B whose teeth act successively on the work and then pass through a slot A<1> in the die. The slot has the same clearance for the tops of the teeth on the cutter throughout its travel through the die. The angle of shear on the work is usually 35 degrees, but the leading faces of the teeth may be given different angles relatively to radii of the cutter to vary the angle of shear, and the top, surface of the die may be inclined from the position shown, and the die may be raised or lowered relatively to the axis of rotation of the cutter to give further variation of the shear angle. The cutter may have side shear as well as front shear. Bearings on the main frame of the machine carry an arbor to which the cutter is secured, the drive being by electric motor or gearing which may be fixed directly to the cutter. A guard X is adjustably mounted on the frame by bolts and slots and the forward end thereof is shaped at X<1> to form a depth of cut stop by engaging a template on the work. The speed of cutting is stated to be from 60 to 300 feet per minute.
