Abstract

469,173. Machining airscrews. LANG, A. A. D. Nov. 15, 1935, No. 31716. [Class 145 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] In a copying-machine for producing airscrew blades, of wood from a model, the work and model are traversed relatively to the cutter and tracer in the longitudinal direction of the blade. The machine comprises a table 9 carrying the model 6 and one or more workpieces 7, 8 mounted on pins 25 and supported by wedges &c. 8a. the table being traversed on rollers 10 along the bed 11 and reversed at the end of each traverse either automatically or by hand. In the latter case, the length of each traverse may be adjusted to suit the length of cut. The cutters 2 and tracer 5 are carried by a frame A pivoted at 12 on a carriage 14 which is given a step-by-step feed between the traverses of the table 9 by means of a screw 16 or other means operated automatically or manually at 17. The carriage 14 slides on a beam 15 adjusted vertically on a gantry 1 by means of screws 18 and a cross shaft 21 rotated by a pulley 20. Each cutter is driven by a belt 4 from a separate electric motor 3 and the pressure exerted by the cutters on the work is adjusted by a weight 23 movable along an arm 22 attached to the frame A. The depth of cut may be varied by adjusting the tracer 5 axially on the frame by means of a hand wheel 24. The pins 25 for supporting the work and model may be attached rigidly to the table 9 or may be adjusted angularly in planes parallel and perpendicular to the traverse in order to allow the cutters to operate at the most efficient cutting angle. The machine may produce separate propeller blades for attachment to a hub or complete propellers as shown, the propellers being turned end for end to machine the two blades and being reversed on the table for machining the backs of the blades according to a different model. Two tables 9 may be used, the work being set upon one whilst it is being machined on the other, and the two tables may be used for machining the opposite sides of the work. Cutting may take place during one or both opposite traverses of the table. The model may be produced by hand or a finished propeller may be substituted for the model on the table 9 and a model produced therefrom.
