Abstract

563,387. Sawing rods into lengths. EARL, W. Feb. 11, 1943, No. 2296. [Class 145 (ii)] A machine for sawing rods transversely into lengths comprises a set of coaxial saws 2 on a.shaft 1 and a rotary work-holder 4 having longitudinal grooves 5 for supporting the work 6 and carrying it past the cutters. The path of travel of the work overlaps the cutters so that the rods are completely severed thereby and the rods may be allowed to rotate in the grooves 5 during cutting or may be held against rotation by wires 9 anchored at 9a and adjustably tensioned at 11. The work-holder 4 has deep circumferential grooves 7 to accommodate the cutters and shallow grooves 8 for the wires 9. The grooves 5 have inclined sides as shown so that the cutters force the rods into the bases of the grooves and to facilitate ejection of the severed blanks, which ejection may be assisted by toothed discs 12 on a shaft 13 driven from the holder 4 at a higher speed through gearing. The cutter shaft 1 is driven by a motor and the holder 4 may be rotated by power through a clutch or by a hand-operated ratchet. The severed blanks, which may be of metal or alloy such as duralumin, are stated to be for conversion into rivets.
