610,833. Match splints. SCHNELLMANN, O. Nov. 21, 1945, No. 31415. [Class 145 (i)] [Also in Groups XXII and XXIV] A machine for manufacturing match splints and the like, and having on either side of the wood cylinder to be peeled a slide, carrying respectively cutting knives for making axial incisions in the cylinder at distances apart equal to the thickness of a splint and cutting discs for making circumferential incisions at distances apart equal to the length of a splint, and a peeling knife to remove the pre-cut peripheral layer to form the separate splints, is provided with a constant-speed motor which drives the headstock spindle, to rotate the cylinder through a stepped wheel gear, and a change-speed gear to determine the cutting speed, the headstock spindle driving through a second speed-change gear a threaded spindle controlling the feed of the knives and also effecting through wheel gears the speed change of the stepped wheel gear, which increases the cylinder rotation speed with decreasing diameter to maintain constant cutting speed, the cylinder being driven from the headstock spindle by drive members engaging it both axially and eccentrically, the latter being flexibly mounted, while the peeling knife reciprocates axially to the cylinder, and the cutting knives follow the rotary movement of the cylinder while cutting. The wood cylinder H is clamped between a tailstock spindle 5 fed towards or away from the cylinder by a motor 45, and the headstock spindle 6, which engages the wood to rotate it by a central drive member 55 and flexibly mounted eccentric drive members 56 fed towards or away from the wood by means of a geared ring 122 driven by a motor 57, which is automatically cut-out when the members 56 reach their extreme withdrawal position. The spindle 6 is driven by a motor 7 through a stepped wheel gear 104 and change gears 9, 10, and itself drives, through change gears 14, 15, a threaded spindle 3 which on rotation causes slides 1, 2 to move towards or away from the cylinder. The slide 1 carries the cutting knives 175, operated to make axial incisions in the rotating cylinder by means of an elliptical movement, by a motor 170, and an eccentric shaft 174 and swing lever 180. The slide 2 carries the cutting discs 160 and the peeling knife 140, which is given a reciprocatory movement axially of the cylinder by an eccentric driven from a further motor, not shown. The spindle 3 further effects the change of speed of the spindle 6 by the stepped wheel gear 104, which it drives through gear mechanism and a grooved shaft 32, which on rotation causes feed wheels 87, 89 to move in steps along the stepped wheel gear, so that the speed of revolution of the cylinder is increased as its diameter decreases and its circumferential speed is kept constant. The width of the splints can be altered by changing the wheels 9, 10 to alter the rotary speed of the cylinder, and the thickness can be altered by changing the wheels 14, 15 to alter the amount of feed of the knives, while the initial position of the slides 1, 2 can be adjusted by a handle 65. After a cylinder has been used, the slides 1, 2 and the feed wheels 87, 89 are quickly returned to their initial position by the spindle 3 being rotated in the reverse direction by a motor 35, a oneway clutch 44 preventing the rotation of the spindle 6 during this operation. During the forward rotation of the spindle 3 the motor 35 is similarly protected by a clutch 41.
