Abstract

1278725 Can making machinery; special work GULF & WESTERN INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS CO 15 April 1970 [17 April 1969] 18014/70 Headings B3A, B3B and B3T A method of trimming a can body or the like comprises making a circumferential cut in the body, thereby forming a burr extending outwardly from a surface of the body, and removing the burr. The trimming apparatus comprises a main drive-shaft 36, which is driven by an electric motor 12, and on which are mounted head turret assembly C and tail turret assembly D. As the shaft 36 is rotated a can J is deposited in a cull assembly G. A rod 98 is driven towards the assembly C by a cam 86 thereby feeding the can on to a head turret spindle assembly E where it is held by fingers 91, rod (338) and tail spindle (D), Fig. 2 (not shown). The spindle assembly is rotated by the motor 12 via a belt and pulley drive 28, 44, 48 and a shaft 50, which carries a pinion 52 meshing with a ring gear 54. Gears 60 on the spindles are driven by the ring gear and thus rotate independently of the head turret. Trimming assemblies H are mounted on shafts 606, on which are secured arms 609 engaging in a cam track of a fixed cam member 610. As the head turret rotates, the cam arms 609 pivot the assemblies H so that their cutting knives M progressively cut through the ends of the can bodies J, Figs. 6-6F (not shown). The burr formed during cutting is removed by a spring-loaded roller mounted on each assenbly H. The burr may alternatively be removed by a non-rotating shoe, an abrading wheel or shoe or by a secondary knife. The can bodies make a plurality of revolutions during cutting and trimming of the burr. As the assembly C continues to rotate, the trimming assemblies H are pivoted clear of the can body which is discharged from the apparatus in known manner. Each knife M is mounted on a member (632), Fig. 4 (not shown), and is formed with a point 740 and a cutting edge 742, which engage the can body J to one side of a vertical line through the rotational central axis of the head turret spindle assembly E. The cutting edge is angled rearwardly so that the reaction force P acts outwardly, thereby pulling the burr due to cutting to the outside surface of the can body.
