[Also in Group XXII] A machine for cutting recesses in doors, windows or stair stringers comprises a head 3 rotatable and slidable on a shaft 2 running the whole length of the machine and the head has a guide 4 in which a tool-carrying bracket 5 is slidable at right angles to the shaft 2. The workpiece 9 rests on a vertically adjustable bar 10 and is pressed by hand against the frame 1. A pair of adjustable abutments 11 determine the distance of the recesses from the ends of the workpiece and pairs of adjustable abutments 20 and 21 on an arm 22 carried by the bracket 5 and on the shaft 2 determine the dimensions of a groove to be cut. For cutting grooves according to a pattern, a pin 15 adjustable on the bracket 5 co-operates with one or more patterns 17 on holders 19. The motor 6, which is counterbalanced by a weight 24, drives a cutter 7 and a depth gauge 12 is provided. A second similar head 3 may be provided to carry a mortising chain.
