Abstract

563,455. Fastenings. WILMOTBREEDEN, Ltd., STEPHENSON; C. H., and GOUGH, L. April 29, 1943, No. 6785. [Class 44] A spring-loaded bolt b for a vehicle, or other door, fastening is operable by an outside handle being rotated in either direction, but can only be operated by an inside handle when rotated in one direction. When the inside handle, attached to a spindle m, is rotated in the opposite direction it causes a locking plate r to move towards the side of the bolt and plate pegs t, on the plate r, in a position to prevent rotation of a cam f which has a pair of fingers, one of which bears on a shoulder i to withdraw the bolt. The cam f has a central boss h which extends through a slot c in the bolt b, the boss h having a square bore j to engage the spindle of an outside handle. The 'spindle m has a collar n provided with a circular recess o to accommodate a circular portion on the end of the cam' boss h. A lost-motion connection between the cam and the spindle m comprises a pair of projections p on the inner periphery of the recess o which lie in a pair of grooves q in the reduced portion of the cam boss h. A spring-loaded ball or other detent y, carried by the boss h, engages with either of a pair of recesses z in the adjacent part of the spindle m to hold the latter against accidental angular movement relatively to the cam f when the projections p occupy positions at the appropriate ends of the grooves q., The pegs tare slidably mounted in housings u on the locking piece r and loaded by springs v to retain the pegs in their retracted positions. Projections w on the periphery of the hole s in the plate r occupy grooves x formed around the circumference of the collar n. When the spindle m is moved to lock the bolt, the lost-motion connection p, q, between the spindle and cam f, allows such movement without affecting the cam. During this movement the grooves x cause projection w, and thus the plate r, to move laterally and place the pegs t in the plane of the fingers of the cam f.
