Abstract

A patdlock comprises two barrel lock mechanisms 13, 14 of differing locking characteristics, said mechanisms having barrels 113, 114 which are coaxially arranged and connected so as to be rotatable together and actuable to latch or release a shackle 2. In the construction shown the shackle is substantially cylindrical and is slidable in bores 37 in arms 101, 201 of a U-shaped body of the padlock; the shackle has an annular groove 102 which is engaged by a latching member 11 to hold the shackle in the locking position and the shackle is biased by a spring-loaded plunger 4 so that it is normally urged towards the releasing position although if necessary the full movement to the releasing position must be completed by hand. Complete release of the shackle from the body is prevented by a spring loaded detent 10 in the arm 201 of the body which engages the groove 102 to prevent this. The plunger 4 is prevented from leaving the bore 3 in the arm 101 of the body by a stop pin 6 which engages a recess 104 in the plunger. The barrels are coupled together by a connecting link 16 which extends from the barrel 113 and engages a recess 17 in the barrel 114; the link 16 also engages a notch in the latching member 11 in such a way that rotation of the barrels from their locking positions moves the latching member to release the shackle 2. The latching member is biased by a spring 18 to the latching position. As shown each of the barrel lock mechanisms is of the pin tumbler type and both sets of pin tumblers must be disposed in the unlocking condition by the appropriate keys for each mechanism before the barrels can be rotated. The difference between the lock mechanisms can be in the height of the various tumblers and consequently in the notching of the keys whilst the number of tumblers can differ and one lock mechanism can be a pin tumbler mechanism while the other is a plate tumbler mechanism. The mechanisms can have differing numbers of rows of tumblers. Instead of the barrels being connected together by a link they can 'be made in one piece. It is also stated that the barrels can engage the shackles directly.
