[Also in Group XXXIII] A latching device securing a ship's hatch cover comprises a body member 13, welded to the hatch cover, an operating member 16, and a rod 19 formed with a hooked end 21 for engagement with a keeper 41. The body member 13 and operating member 16 have abutting cammed surfaces 42, 43 respectively (Fig. 5), and the rod 19 is rotated by the operating member through a sleeve 31 (Figs. 4 and 9) formed with a slot 32 which enables it to be compressed to fit within the bore of the operating member. As the operating member is rotated from the unlatched position the lobes 44 move over the flat portions 47 of the cams 42 and the hook 21 moves into engagement with the keeper 41. Further rotation of the operating member raises it upon the lobes 49 of the cam 42, and compresses the rubber washer 38 to tighten the hook against the keeper. The rod is restrained from rotating further and the operating member slips over the sleeve 31. The outer surface of the operating member is provided with axial slots (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown), by which it may be rotated. A further sleeve 22 (Fig. 10) is welded into the bore of the body member 13, and has a cut out 23 which co-operates with a projection 26 on the rod to retain the latter.
