Abstract
561,828. Mowing machines. BRETHERTON, F. J. March 2, 1943, No. 3386. [Class 6 (iii)] The knife bar 6 of a mowing machine is reciprocated by a rocking arm 13a which carries a strap 13 encircling a sheave 10, the latter being mounted to rotate about an axis which is inclined to its geometric axis. By this means, when the sheave rotates the arm rocks and imparts a reciprocating movement to the knife bar to which it is connected by a pin 14. The sheave shown is mounted on the axle 8 of the travelling wheels 7 and is driven by a petrol engine 3. The engine may also serve to drive the wheels 7, gears 15 and a clutch 16 being provided for this purpose. In an alternative construction the engine is made to drive the axle 8 and the gear and clutch employed to connect the axle to the sheave when desired, and in another construction the engine drives only the sheave, the machine being hand propelled. According to a further modification, the machine is hand propelled and the axle 8 connected to the sheave through gearing either with or without the provision of a clutch.
