[Class 97 (i)] In an objective comprising two divergent components located between two simple convergent components and each consisting of a divergent element compounded with a convergent element, the material for one convergent element has mean refractive index between 1.65 and 1.75 and AbbÚ V number between 34 and 27, and the material for the other convergent elements has mean refractive index between 1.7 and 1.8 and AbbÚ V number greater than 50 and preferably less than 58. The one convergent element may be the front one and be of dense flint glass, the other convergent elements being of #-magnesium oxide crystal; the divergent elements may be of another dense flint glass. The contact surfaces of the divergent components may be uncemented and may have radii greater than 1.5 times the equivalent focal length of the objective. Data for one example are set out.
