Abstract
559,722. Measuring forces. WESTLAND AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and RICHARDS, S. T. A. Aug. 28, 1942, No. 12159. [Class 106 (ii)] Apparatus for measuring forces in which a force is applied by a plunger acting on a flexible diaphragm to a liquid in a sealed chamber communicating with a pressure gauge, is characterized in that the area and shape of the face of the plunger and the coacting face of the diaphragm are substantially the same and the sealed chamber comprises a recess in a plate against which the diaphragm is sealed and into which the engaging end of the plunger is capable of entering with flexure of the diaphragm. As shown in Fig. 1, apparatus incorporated in a tensile and compression testing machine, the plate e has two shallow recesses enclosed by diaphragms a, b of rubber or Neoprene or other suitable material clamped or bonded in position. Plungers n, o of slightly smaller diameter than the diaphragms are connected by studs and distance pieces q, and are acted on by a member s holding the specimen, while the plate e is connected by bolts to a head plate j, operated by a jack. The cavity f or g, in use, is filled with oil and communicates with a pressure gauge, while the other communicates with the atmosphere. For a tensile test, cavity g is operative ; for compression, cavity f. In Fig. 3, a plate w has a single recess n and the plunger 3 is operative for tensile tests only. For compressive tests as in Fig. 6 the apparatus is reversed. The load on a test piece may be recorded by photographing the gauge. The apparatus may be used in a weigh-bridge.
